Super Black: A Powerful Exploration of Black Identity in England

AFIUK is proud to be part of Super Black, a powerful exhibition at Firstsite that explores what it means to be Black in England today. This ground-breaking exhibition, part of Firstsite’s new series of Arts Council Collection National Partner exhibitions, brings together thought-provoking artworks and personal stories from Essex’s Black community.

Curated with the insight and voices of community leaders, including our very own Rachel Walton (Co-founder of AFIUK), Lawrence Walker (Chair of Black History Month Colchester), and Simone McLean and Yasmin Carr of S&S Caribbean Café, Super Black showcases pieces from the Arts Council Collection, newly commissioned work by Southend-based artist Elsa James, and historical objects from the Vanley Burke Archive.

The artworks selected reflect deep conversations around Black identity, consciousness, and representation in UK galleries. Through this exhibition which happened 5 years ago, we aimed to challenge perspectives, celebrate culture, and amplify the voices of Black artists and communities.

Visit Lawrence Walker Gallery and be part of the conversation shaping the future of representation in the arts.
