NHS maternity services need to build trust with communities to reduce health inequalities. African Families in the UK (AFiUK) brings cultural, religious, and spiritual knowledge to their maternity project, which is led by Rachel Walton and Joyce Mcintyre. The project offers maternity specific community ambassadors who build relationships with communities who are most at risk of poor outcomes.

Rachel Nyambura Walton, co-founder of Colchester & Tendring-based African Families in the UK (AFiUK)CIC, which bridges the gap between businesses, other organisations and the public sector, and African and other ethnic minorities, has achieved a prestigious 10-10-10 Program award for completing her first book, The Ambassador – Growing Community Leaders.
The Ambassador, has been written for professional and volunteer practitioners in social and public service, to help better understand the process of building bridges between different ethnic groups in order to improve engagement, understanding and empowerment of those communities, in order to ensure their valid contributions are heard to improve society as a whole
